Snakes in a Box: The Tale of Two Men and a Poker Debt

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Two Colorado men were arrested for attempting to kill someone over a poker debt using snakes in a box. (Image courtesy of The Audobon Society)

File this one under, "WTF?"

It used to be that when you didn't pay your poker debts, you got a nice pair of concrete shoes. Well, it seems that two guys want to buck tradition and go with a nice pair of snake skin shoes.

Herbert Beck and Christopher Steelman were arrested in Colorado for attempting to kill Matthew Sowash, owner of the Amateur Poker League, over a $60,000 debt. This may not sound all that outlandish as far as crimes go, but the method by which they were going to attempt this is what earns them a Darwin Award nomination.

Motherf***** snakes in a box.

Yes, you heard us. Snakes in a box…with Sowash's legs. The plan was to build a wooden box to hold several rattlesnakes and "the lid was to be built to allow Sowash's legs to be put inside but not pulled out." The unfortunately disturbing follow up is that they were also planning to kidnap Sowash's children and use them as leverage to get the money from Sowash. How those two plans were going to work together we're not quite sure. Maybe put the ankle-biters in the box with the other ankle biters and just destroy his ankles? Whatever. Needless to say, Sowash called the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, who he must have on speed dial since being raided by them earlier this year, after getting threatening emails and put an end to this story before it could get any more ridiculous.

Peter Gould Wins NPL UK Main Event, Crushes Son’s Poker Dreams

Monday, August 20th, 2007

UK poker pro Peter Gould fought through the tough field of 34 entrants to the £2,500 buy-in NPL UK Open Main Event at the Loose Cannon Club in London only to find himself at the final table with his own son, Josh Gould.

The field consisted of top poker pros like Mel Judah, Roland De Wolfe, Tony G and Jennifer Tilly, but Josh must have been his toughest opponent. Like a true gentleman though, Peter did not let someone else do his dirty work; he sent his son packing himself in fourth place. As consolation, Josh did get the fourth-place prize money of £8,500 to help comfort him, while he cries himself to sleep whimpering, "Why, Daddy, why?"

Peter took his son's chips and made short work of Jeff Buffenbarger, who went out in third for £12,750. He then disposed of his heads-up opponent, Patrik Selin, in only two hands to take home the £34,000 first-place prize.

The NPL's next stop is the Asia Poker Open in Manila, Philippines from Oct. 10-13.

“ImTheJackal” Mauls Bodog Poker Sunday $100k Guaranteed Tourney

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Bodog online poker player "ImTheJackal" won the $25,000 first-place prize last night in Bodog Poker's Sunday $100,000 Guaranteed online poker tournament. (Bodog Beat Image)

Bodog poker's Sunday $100,000 Guaranteed online poker tournament saw some familiar faces come out to fight through the 873 player field for the $25,000 first-place prize.

Probably the most recognizable name to go deep in last night's tournament was noted internet pro Eric "Rizen" Lynch, who bubbled the final table to go home in tenth place. Bodog regulars "ImTheJackal" and "Henge" have both been to the final table of this event before and did so again last night. "ImTheJackal" finished third just a couple of months ago and "Henge" finished second about a month ago after going heads-up against Jon "PearlJammer" Turner. The only new face in the top three was "julespf", who was in his his first Sunday $100k.

"ImTheJackal" began the final table with the chip lead and never relinquished that advantage, picking off opponents like stragglers from the pack on the Serengeti. In a final display of dominance, "ImTheJackal" hit quad threes on the final hand of play to send "julespf" home in second place and claim the $25,000 first-place prize.

Full final table results and payouts:

1) ImTheJackal - $25,000
2) julespf - $14,000
3) Henge - $9,000
4) BigSanka - $6,500
5) elladaddy_mc - $5,400
6) IlDiavolo - $4,400
7) jqhottie - $3,400
